Ready to run

I got two minutes to say what I need to say and then I am going to run. I am going to go six miles today and try for twenty-seven... I mean this week! I am psyched to do the things that need to get done so we can go up north!! Yay!

If I get a chance I am turning our instructor and participant guides in early. I hope this happens, as then I can maybe get it on Thursday and work on the guides for next week. I have a lot to do today!

Gotta go.

Me, the Missing, and the Dead by Jenny Valentine

Sometimes a person just has to solve the mystery. Why is there a cremation urn in the taxi stand? Whose is it? Who is the woman whose remains are in there? What does this have to do with me?
Lucas has a lot of questions. The first and most important is how he is going to deal with his father's disappearance. Why did dad leave? What did the family do to deserve this? Maybe he's dead? Secondly, how to rescue the woman in the urn. Obviously dead, she shouldn't have to live on the shelf in a stinky, dirty taxi stand. How to get her out? Why? And what to do once a person actually gets her out?
This is a story of a boy who becomes a man under amazing circumstances, and yet-- it doesn't seem so amazing once the story begins to unfold. Jenny Valentine's first novel, originally published in the UK, is a great story of Lucas' piecing together the pieces of the puzzle that is his father. The story is well-told and the ending is satisfying. Her other novels are on my to-read list.

The Restaurant at the End of the Universe by Douglas Adams
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

It may be that one must have a "dry" wit to understand and appreciate Adams. However, I would not classify myself as having anything close to this. I enjoyed this book immensely! What a crazy story! Yet Adams has a lot to say about taking oneself seriously and how much of a waste of time this is. I really enjoyed this book and was sorry when it was over.

The Grand Design by Stephen W. Hawking

This book was great but didn't go far enough to explain Hawkings' ideas. He did make a great case for grand design of the universe, but I could have used a more in depth look. Fascinating reading; more appropriate for 14-18 year-olds.

Outside the Dog Museum by Jonathan Carroll

This story was rather meandering and seemed to go somewhere, just not in an interesting enough place for me to have spent as much time on it as I did. The protagonist changed, but not enough for me... Just not that into it. I'll try other books by Carroll; it was a little dated, so maybe I'll try newer titles by him.

My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist's Personal Journey by Jill Bolte Taylor

This book was amazing! It's hard to believe that the author was ever impaired. Her superb storytelling style and her ability to relate the lessons she learned through the experience of her stroke were so inspiring and gentle. I would love to take a class from her! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and want to buy it for my three children so that they can refer and use the wisdom that Jill Bolte Taylor has shared.

Moonlight Mile by Dennis Lehane
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I enjoyed Lehane's signature one-line understated jokes, and I love that Kenzie and Gennaro are married. He spent some time building to the conclusion and I won't add a spoiler, but this book did not satisfy as did _Gone, Baby, Gone_.

Waiting for Columbus by Thomas Trofimuk
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What an interesting premise. A guy retreats into his area of expertise to stave off reality. I enjoyed this book.
